Why is dock using so much cpu

I went away for a week and my hackintosh stayed in sleep mode for that long. When I came back, I woke up the mac and it seemed ok, for a little while. I opened the App Store, clicked on update all and the system froze. I mean I could move windows but as soon as I clicked on a button I had the spinning wheel. I restarted the system and same thing; as soon as all the windows reopened, the system was unresponsive. A right click on an icon on the dock froze the system.

At this point in time I was running Mojave I could boot into my clone which did not have the issue the clone is a month old. Since I could not find any solution I decided to upgrade to Had the same problem. Removed the Windows App folder and reseted the dock as said, and all smooth now. Thank you man! Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. This happens on the two account on the machine, both of which were migrated from my previous Lion MBP. Here's a trace on the Dock. I'm not a Mac dev so I find reading that hard. I had this same problem on my new MBP Retina. I do have Parallels installed, but the similar issue caused by Parallels has been fixed in a Parallels update which I've installed.

Moreover, none of the workarounds e. I also tried to delete the Dock's plist, restart the process, and restart the computer several times. None of these fixed the problem. Run this from the command line. This command will list the files the Dock process is accessing or tying to access.

I'm not sure if the OS came without it at that location or if I deleted it or moved it mistakenly. Regardless, to fix this I repointed the symbolic link to another desktop picture using the following two commands:.

It seems that the problem was that Dock was repeatedly trying and failing to access the missing Galaxy. Also this fixed another problem I was having where if I locked my screen and then typed my password to unlock it, my computer would hang while trying to log me in. My hunch is that the Dock was trying to access the same missing file and was hanging on the login screen.

For what it's worth, I took this problem to the Genius Bar at an Apple store and they escalated it to "engineering" at Apple. The answer that came back was that it's Parallel's fault, even though I clearly told them that I wasn't running Parallels. I don't think Apple realizes this is their fault yet. It's pretty simple - all about the background desktop picture! Try this in Terminal:.

Once Dock. You will also have to reset your Dock preferences and add other apps as you see fit. If you are satisfied with the fix, and the Dock doesn't hammer the CPU, delete the old Dock preference files which caused all the problems:. On the other hand, if you wish to restore the original preference files for some reason, do this:.

If a restore of the original preference files causes the Dock to misbehave, something in one or both of the two files is munged. Thus through the process WindowServer will pass a single visual element instead of Close the Finder windows you do not use or use a single open window with multiple tabs.

Disable the transparency effects of macOS. Disabling these visual effects will increase anyone's performance Mac.

Disable automatic rearrangement in Mission Control. Close apps you do not use. It was established that the volume of consumption of WindowServer is also influenced by the graphic effects present in the applications.

After you make all these changes or part of them, restart the operating system.
