Why mawlid is bidah
Prophet Muhammad and his close companions did not perform multiple Hajj. They are not known to be around the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad and he did not write and therefore read a tafseer. This one is a head-scratcher too for the same reasons mentioned above. The celebration of birthdays of ordinary people are secular events.
Celebrating birthdays are neither Islamic nor unIslamic. It is how you celebrate that makes them unIslamic boos parties and getting drunk, for example. But once again, how many engage in such parties? Making partners with God is the biggest sin in Islam or at least right up there.
But then again who praises and makes Prophet Muhammad equal to God? I know no one in Muslim communities who does that during or outside of Mawlid celebrations. There is evidence that the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad dates back to the very early period in Islamic history.
It dates back to the early days of successors of the companions of Prophet Muhammad when it was celebrated with poetry and songs to honor him, citing his good manners, which serve or should serve as an example for our behavior. There are many citations and this particular site lists many references, including that of Imam Jalal al Din Suyuti to indicate the centuries old tradition of the mawlid.
More than an occasion for poetry and songs, it is an occasion for spiritual growth. Mawlid celebrations often start with Quran recitation and praising God first and foremost. How he showed kindness, even to his enemies and how he conducted himself when facing adversities should be a source of guidance for all of us. His life struggles and the way he conducted himself are often narrated during Mawlid celebrations.
The Mawlid celebrations reflect on why and how he earned these nicknames. He showed mercy to his enemies upon conquering Makkah- same people who were after his life, and gave general amnesty. Numerous other occasions in his life show his mercy and kindness to others, especially the oppressed, the widows, the orphans, the poor and the needy.
Why would remembering and honoring him be so controversial and divisive? This is an occasion Muslims should use to get united, not divided. The love and respect for him should get us on the same platform. You can help spread the word. Share it on your social media by clicking on the icons in the upper left hand.

Some of them make food and sweets etc. Some of them hold these celebrations in the mosques, and some of them hold them in their houses. Some people do not limit themselves to the actions mentioned above; they include in these gatherings Haram and reprehensible things, such as free mixing between men and women, dancing and singing, or committing actions of Shirk such as seeking the help of the Prophet calling upon him, seeking his support against their enemies and so on.
The people give up work during this period, and they do no work except for going around and watching the entertainment. When there are two days to go until the Mawlid, they bring out a large number of camels, cows and sheep, more than can be described, and they accompany them with all the drums, songs and musical instruments that they have, until they bring them to the square… On the night of the Mawlid there are performances of nasheed after Maghrib in the citadel.
More recently idle entertainment, extravagance, and wasting of money and time have become associated with an innovation for which Allah has not sent down any authority. In conclusion, celebrating the birthday of the Prophet whatever form it takes, is a reprehensible innovation. Whoever is like this, it is not permissible to imitate him or follow his example, even if the majority of people are like this. Rather we should follow the example of those who follow the path of the Sunnah, among the righteous Salaf and their followers, even if they are few.
Truth is not measured by the men who speak it; rather men are measured by the truth. It will be useful to remember some of them in short and with the list below in general:. One should read the Quran and listen to the ones who read. There should be Quran-citing invitations held in appropriate places.
The feelings of love, respect and loyalty for the words of Allah, i. One should perform qada and nafilah supererogatory prayers. If there are prayers exclusive to that night, they can be performed as well. Holy nights should be spent with prayers and with consciousness of kindness in prayers, in accordance with their essence.
Where did I come from? Where am I going to? What does Allah expect from me? Believers should make amends with and forgive each other, and assure their content with others.
Resentful and offended people should be reconciled; people should be pleased, and sorrowful faces should be given a smile. One should pray for the good of himself and for other Muslim brothers and sisters mentioning their names. One should ask the news of those who have got rights over himself and the necessities of moral quality of fidelity and gratefulness should be fulfilled.
One should visit the poor, orphans, the sick and the elderly people and please them with love, compassion, respect, gifts and charity. Verses, hadiths about that night and comments of them should be read from the books about them individually or in groups.
Religious meetings, panels and conversations should be organized, ;advices of preachers should be listened; poems should be recited and a different feeling should be evoked in hearts with religious songs and hymns.
Tombs of the Companions, scholars and saints should be visited and they should be pleased, and supplications should be made to Allah in the spiritual atmosphere of their tombs. One should wish their elderly people, masters, parents, friends and other acquaintances blessed holy nights, by visiting them in person or by phoning, faxing and e-mailing to them.
There is not an exclusive way of praying for holy nights. Holy nights can be spent with prayers salat , reading the Quran, supplications and other kinds of worship… Some special prayers performed at holy nights are not present in sunnah; and they are not based on a notable narration either. There are many narrations encouraging tahajjud and nafilah prayers. Of course, it is more virtuous to perform them at holy nights. Moreover, it is unobjectionable to perform prayers which are said to be exclusive to holy nights additionally; it makes one earn thawabs.
